Thank you, President Mattarella. It took a swipe from the Head of State to avoid the abyss of an adventurous government that threatened to take Italy out of the euro and the country to a certain default and President Mattarella has not disappointed the expectations of most of the Italians who demand respect for the Constitution and fidelity to our place in Europe.
The Head of State courageously took up and won the dispute over the Minister of the Treasury, proudly defended the powers of the Presidency of the Republic and the honor of Italy in the face of the deranged attacks of a part of the German press and saved the savings of the Italians who would have gone disastrously up in smoke if the imprudent plans for exiting the euro, entrusted by Matteo Salvini and Luigi Di Maio to Professor Paolo Savona, had not been stopped in time.
The Italian political situation certainly remains very complex after the vote on March 4, but yesterday afternoon Mattarella avoided the worst and we must duly acknowledge it. A sign of seriousness, after the storm in the markets, is also the call to the Colle by Carlo Cottarelli, to whom it is to be hoped that he will be able to form the President's government or, in the absence of the trust of the Chambers, to manage the return to vote. But equally frankly it must be said that, if the League and the Five Stars claimed to represent the new and even to start the Third Republic, they failed miserably at the first attempt.
The fact that now Di Maio, after having quickly discarded the institutional dress he wore after the vote but who obviously didn't like him, is asking - in the company of the ineffable Giorgia Meloni, always ready to join the rearguard battles - the impeachment of Sergio Mattarella is the counter-proof that we are faced with amateurs in jeopardy and that the indecorous attacks on the Quirinale to mask one's failure are nothing more than one more medal for the Head of State. Thanks again, President Mattarella.
Misinformation reigns supreme. The fact has been reiterated on several occasions that the exit from the euro is not an idea taken into consideration either by the League or by the movement or by Savona. Even if biased, he could easily not lie to the Italians, arguing his opinions with ideas that do not go against the reality of the facts.
You say that the story would have given proof, for the majority forces, of "unequivocal dilettantism that the Italians will remember in the next elections". I believe, in effect, that Italians will remember what happened in the next elections, but not in the sense you expected (hoped for?).
