The London auction of 15 October “The Italian sale” recorded records for several Italian artists and a total of €54.6.
Also registering:
- Over 80% of the Italian sale had never been offered at auction before

- The total 15 years ago for the first The Italian Sale, organized by Sotheby's in 1999, was £5.2m. The evening was led by Fontana's The End of God which sold for £15.9m / $24.7m / €21.6m (est. £15-20m), establishing a new auction record for the artist (previous record: £13.1m / $20.9m, set in November 2013).
- 10 years ago, Fontana's record stood at just $2.3m.
- The auction also saw notable results for four works by Alberto Burri, currently the protagonist of the exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum: the first retrospective of the artist in America for over 35 years.
- For Lot No. 6 one Combustion of 1956 by Burri, 3 collectors competed to bring the hammer to £1.8m / $2.8m / €2.4m (est. £600,000-800,000).
- As many as 5 bidders competed for lot 14 of Burri from the Milanese collection of Alessandro Passarè, taking the award above the highest estimate £2.6m / $4.1m / €3.6m (est. £1.5-2m).
- New Auction Records registered in the auction: Lucio Fontana , Medardo Rosso , Vincent Agnetti
- The number of American buyers in Italian Sale has more than doubled in the last 5 years.
