Bathed in light from head to toe, this year's Connaught Christmas tree bears the stamp of one of today's most innovative, distinctive and influential artists - Sir Michael Craig-Martin CBE.
Known for his vivid use of color and playfulness with light, it was just that Craig-Martin was inspired by the fairy lights that decorate Christmas trees up and down the country. 12.000 circles of light in the shape of a digital rainbow The tree di Connaught, running in a single strand from its top to its base, so every inch of it lights up. As you stand and watch, the colors change continuously, transitioning seamlessly in a carefully choreographed pattern.
The Norway Spruce was sourced from Hertfordshire and selected for its perfect shape. Standing at 9m tall, the 45 year old fir makes a beautifully bold and eye catching statement.
"It struck me that, however beautiful, most Christmas trees are static, immutable. I wanted to create a tree that was dynamic. I decided to engulf the tree with lights and find a way to present a full range of ever-changing colors.”
