Lockdown in sight for Milan and Naples: Rome, Turin and Bologna in the balance

The Government, on the advice of CTS experts, is thinking of a lockdown of at least 2 weeks limited to the large cities most affected by Covid infections. The ban on moving between different regions is back and there is also thought of a national lockdown for all citizens over 70.

The tightening that the Government is studying to counter will not be a national lockdown the impressive surge in Covid infections which has been recorded for days now and which has now plunged the country into an emergency reminiscent of that of spring. The road, at least for now, is another.

The experts of the Technical-Scientific Committee advised the Government over the weekend not to launch indiscriminate measures at the national level but targeted and selective interventions that directly attack the main outbreaks of infection, those with an Rt greater than 1,5. Translated, it means: not national or even regional lockdowns but lockdown for the metropolitan areas and for the most affected provinces of at least two weeks. Milan and Naples are at the top of the list of upcoming closures but Rome, Turin and Bologna are also at risk. For the school you think of enhance distance learning but from eighth grade up.

However, the Cts advised the Government to wait a couple more days to verify the first effects of the latest Dpcm and better calibrate the interventions. Just as he recommended a tightening on public transport and raised the possibility of limiting interregional transfers only to urgent needs. Other non-essential business closures are also not excluded, starting with non-food shops and gaming machines in tobacconists, while shopping malls will most likely be blocked over the weekend.

The Regions, especially the most affected, insist on more general measures and therefore the return of the travel ban between different regions (as it was in the spring), and also an absolute novelty, both nationally and worldwide: the lockdown by age group. After Sunday's summit between the Government and the Conference of the Regions, a proposal came out (by 3 Regions, all center-right) aimed at protecting the groups most at risk, such as the elderly, without however influencing the activities of the whole community. The limit should be 70 years: total closure therefore for the over 70s.
