Layoffs: -8% in the first year of the Jobs Act

Layoffs in sharp decline in 2015. According to data released on Monday by the Ministry of Labour, last year the employment relationships ended due to a dismissal were 841.781, 8,14% less than in 2014. Despite the controversy relating to the abolition of article 18 and the fewer guarantees provided by the new contract with increasing protections compared to the old indefinite term, the numbers seem to be in favor of the Jobs Act.

The most substantial decrease concerns in particular the last quarter of 2015, three months in which layoffs fell to 243.206 units, 42.487 less than in the same period of 2014. In percentage terms, we are talking about a drop of almost 15% ( -14,9%). From the point of view of gender differences, the dismissals of men decreased by 18,4%, while those of women recorded -9,3%.

On the opposite side, namely that of hiring, in the fourth quarter of 2015 2.506.704 employee and semi-subordinate employment contracts were activated, up by 7,2% compared to the same period of 2014. In this case, however, the differences gender are abysmal: +17% for men compared to +1,6% for women.

As regards the various types of contracts, in the months October-December 2015, 1.476.502 fixed-term contracts were carried out (59% of the total) while those with permanent contracts amounted to 739.880, almost 30% of the total. Finally, there were 104.676 collaboration contracts (4,2% of the total), while apprenticeship contracts totaled 43.642, equal to 1,7% of the total. For stable contracts, the increase is over 100% compared to the same period of 2014 (371.519 more).
