Libya: the rebel Premier is on the run

In the night between Thursday and Friday Khalifa Ghwell, premier of the rebel government of Tripoli, left the Libyan capital to take refuge in Misrata, his hometown, where part of the militias and political leaders are not yet in harmony with the new government of premier Fajez Serraj, supported by the UN.

Libyan online media claim that Ghwell was persuaded to leave Tripoli by a delegation of Misrata leaders in favor of the new prime minister. “He only went there to be with his family”, say Ghwell's entourage instead: “Tonight he organized a dinner with his old high school friends…”.

Again according to Libyan sources, even the speaker of parliament Nouri Abusahmin would have left Tripoli and taken refuge in his native area, Zuwara. A Libyan source from Tunis reports that other rebel government ministers are also fleeing from Tripoli.

Since Wednesday, the day of the landing of Serraj and the new government, many men of the rebel Tripoli government have been disappearing: the heads of propaganda, some ministers, even the high military ranks are out of town.

Meanwhile, according to the Libya Herald, Serraj is receiving at the naval base where he has established his government headquarters a series of men of power, such as the governor of the Libyan central bank Sadiq Elbaker, the mayors of the 13 municipalities of Tripoli and the city council of the central area of the Libyan capital.
