Libya, Gaddafi appeals to the tribes as the rebels advance in Tripoli

The advance of the Libyan rebels continues. This morning, after hours of fighting, anti-Gaddafi troops conquered Abu Salim, a central-southern district of Tripoli. This was one of the few areas of the capital still in the hands of loyalist troops. Until yesterday it was thought that right here the Colonel was hiding, probably in the company of some of his children. "Those of Gaddafi are now in Mashrur - says Mohammed Sayed Gargab, one of the rebel leaders - which is a suburb adjacent to Abu Salim, now under our control".

In the meantime, the insurgents have communicated their intention to govern the country directly from Tripoli, thus moving the control center from the stronghold of Benghazi. "I proclaim the start of the resumption of the work of the executive office in Tripoli", announced from the capital Ali Tarhouni, who deals with oil and financial issues in the Transitional National Council. The fighters around him continue to repeat that they have surrounded the Rais, but several witnesses on the field report that the clashes do not seem close to ending yet.

Especially since Gaddafi has returned to inciting his men from the microphones of state television. “The tribes must march on Tripoli – said the Colonel -. Don't leave Tripoli to those rats, kill them, defeat them quickly. Libya does not belong to Italy or France”.
