Libya, Conte's own goal: receives Haftar and infuriates Serraj

In a vain attempt to recover Italy's role in the Libyan chaos, Prime Minister Conte takes an unforgivable misstep: he receives General Haftar at Palazzo Chigi and provokes the wrath of President Sarraj, who declines the invitation

Libya, Conte's own goal: receives Haftar and infuriates Serraj

Fool diplomat for Giuseppe Conte. On Wednesday the Italian Prime Minister had organized two meetings at Palazzo Chigi with the warring Libyan leaders: the first, with the general Haftar, lasted about three hours; the second, with the premier Sarraj, was never held.

Tripoli's number one was returning from Brussels to head for Rome, but when he learned that the head of the Italian government was in conversation with his enemy decided to return directly to Libya.

"There can be no dialogue or meeting with a war criminal”, said the Libyan ambassador to the EU, Hafed Gaddur.

Conte's decision to meet Haftar first has also sparked a lot of controversy in Italy. From the opposition, the leader of the League, Matteo Salvini, gave the premier of the “amateur on the loose”, since – according to the protocol – he should have first met the head of government recognized by the international community and only then the general.

The political clash risks flaring up again The 15 January, when the Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, will report to the Senate on the crisis in Iran, Iraq and Libya.

But the fact that Parliament is also divided on the delicate dossiers of international crises does not please the Prime Minister, who has convened for Friday morning at Palazzo Chigi a meeting with representatives of the majority and the opposition to discuss Italian military missions in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, in a letter sent to the newspaper The RepublicDi Maio admitted the difficulties of our country in the international arena, underlining however that Italy can only play an important role if it manages to form a team.
