Liberalizations: taxis still on strike

The internal front is split after yesterday's smoky talk between the trade unions and the Government - The base continues to protest, refusing to resume service - Meanwhile, expectations are growing for the verdict of the Council of Ministers, which will kick off today freedom from the much feared decree on liberalisations.

Liberalizations: taxis still on strike

Divided but stubborn, Italy's taxi drivers won't give up. Theirs continues today mobilization against the sector liberalization project developed by the Monti government. While the parking lots remain empty, several white cars still crowd the area around the Circus Maximus in Rome. This is the protest headquarters, where many of them spent the night.

Meanwhile, tension is rising as we await to understand what the final verdict of the Executive will be, which today at the end of the Council of Ministers will give the green light to the decree of discord. Yesterday there were signs of an openness towards the category, but really the dispatch of trade union representatives to Palazzo Chigi it has created new problems, opening an internal fracture on the front of the taxi drivers.

The grassroots strongly contested their trade unionists, accused of having betrayed the cause: insults, throwing smoke bombs and firecrackers, protest chants. And above all the decision not to resume service - as had also been requested by Loreno Bittarelli, leader of Unitaxi - thus risking the injunction by the police commissioner of the capital, Francesco Tagliente.

In short, with nothing concrete in hand, taxi drivers have no intention of letting go. And the inconvenience continues in all major Italian cities, awaiting the verdict of the CDM.
