Free movement in the UK: stop from March 2019

The free movement of EU citizens in the United Kingdom will be interrupted in March 2019, said the spokesman of the British premier, Theresa May. The announcement came as part of an internal debate in the May government, which appeared to be strongly divided on this matter.

A proposal previously made by the Home Secretary, Amber Rudd, instead provided for a three-year transitional period after the conclusion of the Brexit negotiations in which free movement would essentially remain in force.

But after the strong criticisms of another minister, the head of international trade Liam Fox, who has publicly stated that he had not been informed of Rudd's proposal, came the clarifying statement from Downing Street.
