Open letter from economists to Tria: hands off the technicians

Appeal to the number one of the Treasury to protect the independence of state technicians threatened with purge by the majority parties, starting with the governor of Bank of Italy, the president of INPS and MEF technicians - The list of signatories of the appeal - VIDEO.

Open letter from economists to Tria: hands off the technicians

We publish the text of an open letter written by a group of economists (the names are at the bottom) to the address of the Minister of Economy, Giovanni Tria. The objective of the text is to ask the Treasury to protect the independence of the technicians in the service of the state in every possible way, who must not be subjected to the scrutiny of politics, despite the fact that the parties currently in government wish for a substantial purge of the figures deemed inconvenient.

Illustrious Minister Prof. Giovanni Tria,

Italy must remain a representative democracy in full respect of our Constitution.

We were therefore deeply alarmed by the "warning" that was addressed to you by a political part of the Government to which you belong, against the "technicians" of your Ministry, which states that "the whole Movement is convinced that some MEF technicians do not carry out their role with independence and professionalism. We are surprised that Minister Tria, instead of making assessments of the merits and cleaning in his Ministry he defends them regardless”. Sinister consideration unexpectedly shared by President Conte, who left us appalled by the evident sharing of the word "cleaning"; which to many of us recalls subversive practices of democracy already experienced in the dark times of the Fascist period.

It is not the first time that the Government of which you belong has treacherously attacked some servants of the State: first the Governor of the Bank of Italy and then the President of INPS.

Minister, you know that balancing the different powers of the state is an essential condition for the survival of any democracy. Instead, unfortunately, the position taken by the entire Government is violating article 98 of our Constitution which states unequivocally that "Public employees are at the exclusive service of the nation", and not at the service of a pro tempore political coalition in power.

Minister, you certainly know that many of us are very critical of the government's economic policy of which you are an important part, but in light of the "warning" addressed to you, we are confident that you know how to exercise the right/duty to reject such " warning". Otherwise, not only your credibility as Minister would be at stake in international public opinion, but Italy's very image as an authentically democratic country.
