Lempertz: auction of "old Italian works" still unknown to the market

Lempertz as an auction house is particularly recognized in the market for the proposal of Northern European and Flemish painting. This next November auction is full of Italian works from private European collections, and in some cases, disappeared from the market for decades.

Of note are a couple of Turin candelabra, Giovanni Battista Novalese manufacture, approx. 1790 (estimate: 3.000-3.500 euros), a Neapolitan nativity scene (9.000-12.000 euros) and a group of nine scagliola panels, by Don Enrico Hughford (600.000-700.000 euros)

Among the works of the sixteenth century: an altarpiece depicting San Sebastiano, work signed by Marco Palmezzano (estimate 32.000-36.000 euros) competes with a tablet of Workshop of Vivarini (estimate 25.000-30.000) and with a very interesting Nativity, rare early work by Antonio Allegri known as Correggio (estimate 120.000-150.000): the panel transferred to canvas, datable to 1512-1513, was exhibited only once at the Kunsthalle in Baden Baden (1975), together with masterpieces from the Pinacoteca di Brera. Since then, his traces have disappeared and he has disappeared from literature, to recently emerge in an English private collection.

For Lombard painting we find a Leonardesque Madonna recently returned to the Giampietrino (estimate 25.000-30.000), to an intriguing portrait James Ceruti (50.000-70.000 euros), passing from a canvas by G. B. Moroni (estimate 140.000-180.000); among the Genoese one stands out St. Francis in Ecstasy di Bernardo Strozzi, among the most loved compositions by the Capuchin painter.

The seventeenth century, between Classicism and Baroque, here is a rare Allegory of Temperance, of Geneva Cantofoli (20.000 – 25.000 euros), a workshop version of the find of Saint Petronilla, shovel performed by Guercino (15.000 euros starting point) for St. Peter's Basilica, as are also numerous mythological scenes, ranging from representations of Nymphs and Satyrs (Bernardino Cesari, with depictions of Hercules e Prometheus, in the spirit of Tenebrism.

Among the eighteenth-century works, a sensual one St. Mary of Egypt of the Treviso (20.000-25.000 euros) is flanked by a much more chaste Magdalene di Frederick Benchovich

For the still-life a masterpiece of Christopher Munari (80.000-100.000 euros).

In the section dedicated to works on paper, a sheet of Giovanni Battista Piazzetta depicting two figures reading (estimate 40.000-60.000 euros).

For Sculpture, the Nettuno in marble of Girolamo Campagna (60.000-70.000 euros)as well as the ivory group from the Algardian area, representing the scourging (25.000-40.000 euros).

And finally the nineteenth century with Italian views of artists such as Aschenbach, Krummer, up to Gorbatoff.
