Emilia Romagna is the "cradle" of bathing establishments. Companies that manage beaches +25% in 10 years

In first place is Emilia Romagna, followed by Tuscany and Liguria. After the agreement on beach concessions, which from 2024 January XNUMX will have to be assigned on the basis of the tenders, Unioncamere publishes a special classification of companies engaged in the activities of "management of bathing establishments" based on data from the Chambers of Commerce Business Register.

Emilia Romagna: the cradle of bathing establishments

Well, according to the numbers provided by the association, in Italy 1.063 out of a total of 7.173 operating as of last December 31st are in Emilia Romagna. The largest number of entrepreneurial realities in the sector are active above all in Ravenna (191), Rimini (155), Cervia (153). If the 117 enterprises of Riccione (fifth) and the 114 of Cesenatico (sixth) are added, the five Romagna municipalities total 730 entrepreneurial realities, 68,7% of all the infrastructures of the Romagna Riviera and 10,2% of the national total.

Immediately after Emilia-Romagna, in the Olympus of Italian bathing we find two "historic" destinations for sea lovers: Tuscany, with 914 businesses distributed along 397 km of coastline (2,3 businesses per km) and the Liguria, with 807 companies overseeing 330 km of coastline (2,4 per km). As regards the first, in Camaiore (91 companies along just 3 km of coast) there is also the record for the maximum density of seaside activities (31 companies per km), compared to a national average (measured on the 770 municipalities bordering on our seas) focuses on the one-to-one relationship between businesses and kilometers of coastline.

In 10 years 1.443 more companies

According to the survey by Unioncamere, in Italy, the race to manage bathing on the coasts of the boot (including those of lakes and rivers) from 2011 to today has led an overall increase of 1.443 companies (+25%) which had the southern regions as protagonists above all, "definitely launched to recover their positions with respect to the Centre-North", comments Unioncamere. In detail, in the period considered, the most significant growth in absolute terms concerned Calabria (+328 units) which doubled the budget of 2011. Followed by Sicily (+198 activities, +67,6% over the decade), Campania (+184) and Puglia (+160). In relative terms, the most consistent acceleration of the decade is that of Sardinia (+162,5%).

“The exercise of this particular activity takes place mainly in the form of partnerships (3.507 companies with this legal form at the end of 2021, equal to 43% of the total), a probable reflection of the frequent family management of this type of activity . 2.099 companies (29%) choose the joint-stock company formula, with the remaining 28% distributed between individual companies (25%) and other forms, mainly made up of cooperatives (3%)”, reads the report. .

Turnover and governance: seaside businesses under X-rays

In terms of financial statements, among the 1.700 joint-stock companies, 68,4% is represented by companies with a turnover of less than 250 thousand euros. 18,6% are between 250 and 500 thousand euros, 9,5% are in the range between 500 thousand and 1 million, while a small group (3,4%) totals receipts exceeding six zeros at the end of the year.

Finally, as regards governance, one out of 4 bathing companies is led by women (1.809 businesses, 25,2% of the total, a figure higher than the national average of 22,1%) while only 6% (427 businesses) are led by young people under 35, a share lower than the national average of the 8,9%.

In Calabria, the percentage of women-run businesses reaches 31,3%. Seugono, Friuli Venezia Giulia (31%) and immediately after Tuscany and Lazio, respectively with 28,8 and 28,6% of female representation. In Veneto (11,8%) the share of female-led seaside businesses is lowest.

As for youth businesses, the highest presence rates are found in the southern regions with (once again) Calabria in the lead (with 12,7% of youth businesses out of the total of seaside resorts) followed by Basilicata (9,1%), Sicily (8,4 .8,1%) and Campania XNUMX%).
