Electoral law, Pd-M5S: distant understanding, the crux is governance

There was dialogue, no synthesis. After today's meeting on the electoral law between the Democratic Party and the 5 Star Movement, the grillino Luigi Di Maio talks about the "Democratellum" (the proportional M5S proposal) as a "starting point". Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, on the other hand, continues to focus on governability as a primary objective and recalls that the Chamber has already approved the Italicum (the proposal that emerged from the "Pact of the Nazarene" with Forza Italia, with a majority nature). As if to say: discussing is fine, but the work done so far between Pd and Fi cannot be cancelled.

“We will make our observations online clearly and if we manage to find a point of agreement we are happy about it – said the Prime Minister -. Let's be corny, we think there must be a winner. The delicate point of the "Toninellum" (or the "Democratellum", ed) is that there may be a winner, but there is no certainty. In the Italicum there is. The "Porcellum" was voted by the PDL and the League with the votes against of our party, for many reasons. The first of which is that it did not give a chance to win. Bersani, in Bersanese, explained it well: I finished first but I didn't win. I want a mechanism where whoever arrives first wins. The question of preferences or blacklists comes later”.

Di Maio retorted that “there is no 'you ask, we answer', we are making a comparison. You cannot ask us to accept what you are doing in Parliament”. Objection to which the Democratic Party replied through the mouth of Alessandra Moretti: "We have asked for a comparison many times …".

In a statement released after the meeting, the grillini say they are “happy that the Democratellum is a starting point. We will evaluate the merits of the observations made by the Prime Minister and on the other hand we will bring ours to the next meeting to find a quick synthesis. We can give an electoral law to Italian citizens already in the next hundred days with the aim of giving the country healthy and clean governance".

As for the other tables, Renzi asked the Five Stars to also discuss constitutional reforms, starting with that of the Senate. "We are available for a table of reforms - replied Di Maio -, but the deadline for the amendments expires tonight: it is clear that if we do not want to make fun of the citizens, we must move the deadline for the amendments". At this point the Premier chose the counter-attack: “But you presented the amendments, didn't you? Then we will discuss them in committee."
