Electoral law, Letta: here we are

The deputy secretary of the Pd: "The agreement will be communicated shortly" - "The Democratic Party prefers colleges, but in order to change the system it is ready to think about preferences too".

Electoral law, Letta: here we are

The agreement on the electoral law “is there and will be communicated shortly. Not only that: when it is announced, it will certainly trigger criticism from those who want to continue appointing parliamentarians". This was revealed by the deputy secretary of the Democratic Party, Enrico Letta, in an interview with ilsussidiario.net.

“It's the last chance – wrote the deputy secretary in a note -. It must be seized at all costs to give back to citizens the power to choose parliamentarians. And thus begin to restore credibility to Parliament. We believe in it and we are doing everything to make it happen”.

As for the words of ex-minister Calderoli, who painted instead a situation of absolute chaos on the matter, Letta reiterates that the exponent of the League "should be the first to keep silent on the subject, given that he gave birth to the worst electoral law that was ever conceived in Italy. Unfortunately, Porcellum has not only damaged those who created it, but also those who have opposed it from the beginning, such as the Democratic Party. And I think this is unacceptable."

On the contents of the new law, Letta reiterated that “the Democratic Party prefers colleges, but in order to change the system it is also ready to think about preferences".

However, the deputy secretary thinks “that the time is now ripe and therefore I am making an appeal to the select committee of the Senate commission to come out into the open by next week. Also because we have a duty to follow up on the appeals of the Head of State, to whom the country owes a great deal".
