Electoral law, the Chamber rejects the constitutionality rulings

Danger escaped for the Italicum in Montecitorio. The Chamber of Deputies rejected the constitutionality rulings presented by Sel, Lega and Popolari per l'Italia to the new electoral law. There were 154 yes votes, 351 no votes, 5 abstentions. The vote took place by secret ballot at the request of the president of the deputies of Sel, Gennaro Migliore.

The preliminary ruling presented by the Movimento 5 Stelle was also rejected, this time by open scrutiny: the document was rejected with 377 yes and 120 no. The votes of difference with respect to the secret ballot were therefore 26.

The outcome of the vote on the constitutionality rulings was welcomed with a long applause from the Assembly. The fear of many deputies was that behind the anonymity of the operation there could be hidden a number of snipers such as to jeopardize the stability of the Berlusconi-Renzi axis.

The first merit votes on the law could even arrive on Tuesday 11 February, due to the overtaking of the decree law on the land of fires on the agenda. In fact, there are just over 400 amendments to the electoral law filed by the various components of the hemicycle, a higher number, therefore, than those presented in the commission.
