Electoral law: agreement reached at the lightning summit of Pdl, Pd and Udc in Montecitorio

Found an agreement on electoral law and on some amendments to the Constitution at the lightning summit between the representatives of the three parties that support the Monti government.

”At the end of themeeting between Pdl, Pd and Third Pole – reads the note – it was agreed on the need to place the reform of the Constitution and the electoral law in parallel. The agreement on the revision of the Constitution provides for the reduction of the number of parliamentarians, the revision of the age for active and passive electorates, the strengthening of the executive and the powers of the prime minister in Parliament, the start of overcoming the perfect bicameral system. As regards the revision of the electoral law, the agreement provides for: the return to citizens of the power of choice of parliamentarians, a system no longer based on the obligation of coalition, the indication of the candidate for prime minister, a threshold and the right of tribune".

The majority meeting ended after almost two hours. They participated in it the secretaries of the PDL Angelino Alfano, that of the Pd Pier Luigi Bersani and that of the UDC Pier Ferdinando Casini in Montecitorio. The meeting took place in Silvio Berlusconi's studio in the Chamber. Among the participants in the summit also Violante, Adornato, Bocchino, Quagliariello, Pisicchio and La Russa.

"Article 18 is a reform that needs to be corrected". As' Pier Luigi Bersani he replied jokingly to journalists who asked him if the art. 18 of the Workers' Statute is not a reform that deserves to be discussed at this afternoon's summit. The leader of the Democratic Party confirmed that this issue was not dealt with in any case. Bersani underlined that for the Democratic Party the electoral law is "an absolute priority, but the reduction in the number of MPs is also essential. I think we can go ahead to refine some aspects of the discussion we have started".
