Il triumph of the candidacy di Milano e Cortina for the organization of Winter Olympics of 2026 yes, it is also a victory for Italy, but it is also unhe resounding defeat of Rome, Turin and the Five Stars, with Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio in the lead.

The prejudicial No of the grillini and the Giunta Raggi caused Rome to lose the 2024 Summer Olympics and Di Maio's intervention was decisive inself-exclude Turin from the 2026 Olympics. Yesterday the Piedmontese capital could have been on the winners' podium together with Milan and Cortina but it didn't happen that way. And if the five-star mayor of Turin, Chiara Appendino, was among the first to loyally congratulate Milan and Cortina on yesterday's victory, not a few - even in the city of the Mole - remembered with regret Di Maio's No who rejected the candidacy Turin for the 2026 Olympics thundering: "Public money is not spent on these events, if private individuals want to put them on, go ahead".

But the bigger wound is of course Rome's No at the 2024 Olympics. It could have been – as in 1960 – an opportunity for the capital to leap forward and receive extraordinary resources that would have brought jobs and development opportunities, but the grillini and mayor Raggi did not feel like facing the test, fearing not knowing how to control the dangers of corruption, which certainly exist in every major event but which an administration that knows its stuff can very well dominate.

Thus Milan becomes increasingly the real capital of Italy in the XNUMXs and with Cortina - according to studies conducted by Bocconi and Sapienza - will be able to receive from the 2026 Winter Olympics up to 5 billion euros in economic benefits.

But if Milan triumphs and detaches Rome more and more, the Capital can only blame itself after having made a mistake three times (Alemanno, Marino and Raggi) in choosing a mayor who was able to put it back on track and relaunch it. A mistake that Milan has never made because in the Lombard capital all the mayors who have followed one another, from those of the centre-right to those of the centre-left, have never done any damage and have set to work at the service of the city. And the results – not just for the shiny new skyscrapers – can be seen.

On the political level, however, the 2026 Winter Olympics are a distinct success of the League, who with the undersecretary to the Prime Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti – supported by the Northern League regions (Veneto and Lombardy) – led, together with the president of Coni Malagò, the political diplomacy operations to broaden the Italian consensus at the expense of the Swedish competitors. But the new Olympics are also yet another boomerang of the Five Stars, sinking under the rain of their Nos. The No to the Olympic Games, the Tav, the Tap and the Ilva of Taranto are all Yes to the Lega and Matteo Salvini but it doesn't seem that the grillini have noticed it yet and perhaps, when they wake up, it will be late.
