Popular banks and their history in Europe in a new book

Drowsy continues its cultural activity with the publication of the book "Popular Banks and the Association at the Paris Universal Exposition”, on the history of popular credit in Europe. In order to find in history those essential reference points to get out of the economic crisis. The preface is signed by Dominique Martinie.

The initiative of the National Association of People's Banks is aimed at making known and enhancing the role of the popular credit and its contribution to the economic, political and social construction of the Italian state since its inception. From history it is possible to draw numerous and useful lessons in dealing with the delicate situation we are experiencing and which presents elements similar to the past and from which we can learn.

The active, organized and recognized presence of the Italian People's Banks and of the Association itself at the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1900 is mainly due to Louis Luzzatti, one of the most active cooperators as founder of various cooperative banks and first Governor of the Bank of Italy who, in the delicate process of modernization between the 800s and 900s, was able to sense the innovative and international scope of the Universal Exposition, described in the book through unpublished documents.

One hundred and twenty years after the event - reads a note from Assopopolari - which marked the beginning of the "short century" represent a useful opportunity to renew relations with the realities of the International banking cooperation operating in the world starting from Europe in the sign of a long and consolidated tradition of reciprocal exchanges and collaborations.

“The uncertainties of our time require recourse to history and culture – he commented Giuseppe DeLucia Lumeno, Secretary General of Assopopolari and author of the publication – to rediscover strong values and essential points of reference. The international vocation and territorial roots have always been the constitutive elements of Credito Popolare and retracing its history means making a precious heritage available to the international community".

“The level of activity and the consideration that banking cooperation enjoys throughout the world represent the way forward to bring the economy out of the crisis – continued De Lucia Lumeno -. Assopopolari, also through operations of a cultural nature like today's one, by renewing its international activity, intends to follow this path”.
