After two consecutive years of double-digit declines, the Italian bicycle market finally returns to register a positive sign, albeit timid. A to act as a towing vehicle are the pedal assisted bicycles, which in 2024 confirm themselves as the true protagonists of the sector: 274.000 eBikes sold, with an increase of 0,3 % compared to the previous year. A modest figure in absolute terms, but which takes on another value if compared with the trend of traditional bikes, in constant decline for years.
Le eBikes represent today the 20% of the overall market of two-wheeled pedal vehicles in Italy, a share doubled compared to 2019. And while the bicycle sector as a whole is struggling to exceed 1,35 million units sold, pedal-assisted cycling is gaining ground, supported by growing domestic production (+17%) and a exports in full expansion (+28%)According to market estimates, the Italian e-bike sector will reach a value of approximately $952 million by 2025.
An industry in search of a new identity
In the context of an Italian manufacturing industry that has been marking time for almost two years, the bicycle industry – and eBikes in particular – seems to be one of the few positive exceptions. The production of eBikes in our country has gone from just 24.000 units in 2016 to 340.000 pieces in 2024, equal to almost 17% of total production of the sector. A leap in scale that tells of a profound change and not just a cyclical one.
even the trade balance reflects this dynamism: according to the Ancma (National Association of Cycle, Motorcycle and Accessories), in 2024 we went from a surplus of 21 million euros to one of 175 million, however, in the face of a export value slightly down (153 million, -0,6%), a sign that more bikes are sold abroad but with a lower average price positioning. In short, the market demands affordable quality, a field in which the Italian industry can still have its say.
Il comparison with the major European markets however, reveals the Italian delay in the diffusion of eBikes. In Germany, only in 2023, were sold over 2,1 million electric bicycles, surpassing traditional bicycles for the first time. The total circulating fleet has reached 15,7 million units, with an eightfold growth in ten years.
City, Trail and Cargo: How eBike Use Is Changing
Analyzing the most sold types in Italy, the market reflects the evolution of lifestyles. The e-MTB (electric mountain bikes) constitute 43% of sales, followed by e-city bike (51%), while the racing/gravel segment stops at 5%. More marginal, but clearly growing, are the cargo e-bike, which have doubled their volumes in two years (from 1.500 to 3.000 units), a clear sign of a growing interest in sustainable mobility solutions also in the urban logistics sector.
The push comes above all from cities, where the daily use of the eBike – home-work, shopping, small transport – meets the needs of sustainability and convenience. And the forecast, according to Bosch eBike Systems, is that By 2025, half of new bikes sold in Europe will be electric. Italy, albeit at a slower pace, is following this trajectory.
