Even last month, Italian salaries remained at a standstill. This was communicated by Istat, explaining that in March the contractual wage index remained unchanged compared to February and recorded a growth of 1,4% on an annual basis. In the first quarter of 2013 the figure increased by 1,4% compared to the corresponding period of 2012.

With reference to the main macro-sectors, in March contractual hourly wages recorded a trend increase of 1,8% for employees in the private sector and a zero change for those in the public administration. The sectors that showed the greatest trend increases in March are food, beverages and tobacco (3,6%), textiles, clothing and leather processing (2,8%), water and waste disposal services (2,6%). No changes, however, for telecommunications and in all sectors of the public administration.

Last month there were about 5,3 million employees awaiting contract renewal, of which about 2,9 million belonged to the public sector. There were 44 contracts awaiting renewal, of which 15 from the public administration. At the end of March, the share of employees awaiting renewal was 40,8% of the total economy and 23,4% in the private sector. The wait for renewal for workers with expired contracts is, on average, 28,8 months for all employed persons and 16,2 months for those in the private sector.

Again at the end of March, the national collective bargaining agreements in force for the economic part corresponded to 59,2% of employed employees and 55,7% of the payroll observed. Among the contracts monitored by the survey, there was the positive dissolution of the reserve of the hypothetical agreements for the employees of the previously signed energy and oil, electricity and Rai contracts. At the same time no agreement has expired. Therefore, at the end of the month, 30 contracts were in force, which regulate the remuneration of approximately 7,6 million employees.
