Work, Fornero: improvements yes, steps backwards no

SMinister Elsa Fornero is clear on the labor market reform: "The labor market reform bill is not a definitive text - she said this morning in the Senate committee, which began examining the bill passed by the government – . It has good balance. The balance can also be improved”, but “an operation with the sling bar backwards is not in the country's interest. Changes can be made, which is Parliament's job to improve the balance as a whole without, however, setbacks”.

Fornero then returns to article 18: the introduction of the possibility of reinstatement in the event of the manifest non-existence of the economic reason in the individual dismissal “does not distort anything. The political compromise has not detracted from the value of article 18. No one can argue that the changes have distorted the text on which there was agreement”.

There are already integration and modification proposals announced by the various groups on the provision, in particular on entry flexibility and social safety nets. And the minister himself underlines that the government is "willing to acknowledge" that there are cases of inaccurate interpretation on entry flexibility. "The reform is important for the country, the government does not claim to know everything". And he points out that the government has “examined the various forms of contract, to understand where the possibility of abuse could lurk. If we have made some incorrect interpretations, we are absolutely willing to acknowledge it” and – he adds – “if someone tells us 'we can act this way, that's fine with us'.

And after all, even one of the speakers, Tiziano Treu (Pd) notes that "the text in its layout and the basic ideas cannot be altered, but some points can. Perhaps there will be some intervention on incoming flexibility, but it must be clear that the bad one is not working”. And Maurizio Gasparri announces that "the Pdl is already at work with meetings and meetings with which, also listening to companies and social partners, it will define few but clear changes to a text full of errors".

As for timing, the goal is to have the reform of the labor market passed by the end of the month in the Senate so as to be able to reach the finish line by the summer. And Fornero herself hopes for "hopefully quick" times. The hearings of the trade unions and then of Confindustria are scheduled tonight.
