Austria goes to the right: Kurz chancellor

Thirty-year-old conservative Sebastian Kurz, former foreign minister, wins the Austrian elections with 31% of the votes and the chancellor in pectore but will have to ally himself with the ultra-right who has achieved clear electoral success - An anti-migrant and anti- EU

Sebastian Kurz, the 31,4-year-old leader of the popular party, is the new Austrian prime minister. Elections won with 27,4% of the preferences, beating outgoing president Christian Kern. The real surprise of the Austrian electoral round, however, is the result obtained by Heinz Strache's nationalist right, which obtained XNUMX% of the votes and which, in all likelihood, will have a specific weight in future government moves.

So waiting for a decisive turn to the right: a hard punch on refugees and change on the subject of community laws. If Strache's ultra-right were to enter the next government, he has already made it known that he wants to turn his back on Brussels.

Throughout the electoral campaign, the new premier Kurz claimed his anti-migrant moves, such as the blockade of the Austro-Balkan border which caused the tragedy of Idomeni or the deployment of the army at the Brenner Pass.
