Atalanta becomes American: Percassi sells the majority of the club to the US fund of Mr Boston Celtics

THEAtalanta becomes (largely) American. The family Percassi, until now sole owner of the Bergamo football team, announces in a note that it has sold a majority stake in the club to a group of investors led by Stephen Pagliuca, co-owner of the NBA basketball team Boston Celtics, as well as co-chairman of Bain Capital, one of the leading investment funds in the world.

Atalanta to the US fund: how the share transfer works

In detail, it will go to newcomers 55% of the Goddess, the sub-holding of the Percassi family which has approx 86% of Atalanta's share capital. The remaining 45% will remain in the hands of the Percassis, who remain the company's single largest shareholder.

The new governance

As for governance, "it will be the expression of an equal partnership", reads the note: Antonio and Luca Percassi will continue to play the role of president and CEO of Atalanta respectively, while Stephen Pagliuca will be appointed Co-chairman of the club.

The team of new investors "includes leading professionals with in-depth experience in the football and sport sector in general - continues the statement - Also for this reason, the partnership aims to strengthen the company and the team, with the intention of achieving a further improvement in sporting and economic results”.

The commitment is to "guarantee the Club an even more international future, increasing the awareness of the brand outside the European borders, expanding the network of talents to which Atalanta has access and opening the doors to new opportunities for commercial collaborations as well as the use of innovative technologies for sports and financial management – of the club”, concludes the note.
