The EU starts negotiations for gas pipelines linking the Caspian and the Southern Corridor

The European Union has formalized the start of negotiations with Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan for the construction of a gas pipeline system that will connect the Southern Corridor with the reserves of the Caspian area.

A note from Brussels explained that the operation constitutes "a milestone in the creation of the Southern Corridor and represents the first operational decision in the context of the common energy strategy adopted last 7 September". Oettinger then underlined that Europe “is speaking with one voice and the Trans Caspian gas pipeline is one of the main projects of the Southern Corridor to bring new sources of gas to Europe. We intend to make it happen as soon as possible." The agreement will be the first step in the construction of a submarine link between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan which will be connected with the infrastructure intended to bring methane from Central Asia to Europe.
