The British Bankers Association will now have a woman at its helm. There British Bankers' Association, one of the UK's most powerful lobbies, named Noreen Doyle as its chairwoman: she is the first woman to hold such an office in the nearly century-old history of the British Banking Association, which represents, among others, Barclays Plc and Lloyds Banking Group Plc.

Doyle, 66, is a vice president of Credit Suisse and was formerly the first vice president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Doyle will replace, as announced by the lobby, the current president Nigel Wicks starting from next October 17th.

The BBA was created in 1919 and represents over 200 banks. The association is facing a particular moment, following the Libor scandal. The BBA, in fact, after years has lost the role of benchmark in setting the rate, in an attempt by British regulators to revive the reputation of the banking industry.

“This particular moment represents a great challenge, but also a great opportunity for the British banking industry”, said Doyle, who then said she was “honored to have been nominated as the new president of the BBA”.

"Rebuilding customer confidence, raising industry standards and working with the government and regulators to ensure that our banks remain competitive - he clarified - are some of the problems I intend to work on".
