The wisdom of behavior: listed companies and benefit companies

STRATEGIZING by Emanuele Priest

Wisdom in philosophy means to reach the truth. I like to think that, for organizations, wisdom means reaching reality and awareness. This level of awareness can only be achieved if one takes responsibility for the weight of one's actions and behaviour.

I talked about these topics during a https podcast://www.paroledimanagement.it/il-domatore-di-aquiloni-la-saggezza-dellimpresa/ and I wanted to return to the subject as there are a couple of clarifications that I would like to elaborate on. The wisdom of an organization can only materialize through a relevant series of exemplary, virtuous and respectful behaviours.

My proposal to go in this direction consists in the fact that, to be very concrete, the company should draw inspiration from listed companies and benefit companies in order to achieve its objectives and implement its strategy. The listed company must accept procedures and methodologies that make it readable and transparent. The stock exchange, being an organized market for the negotiation of shares of capital, demands from companies that want to be listed, transparency, rigor and visibility regarding the results obtained and future forecasts.

The benefit company represents the evolution of the very concept of company, as it contemplates in its corporate purpose, in addition to profit objectives, the purpose of positive impact and common benefit on society and the environment. To demonstrate this result on the company, it is required to report the operating methods and the measurement of impacts. At the basis of this reasoning are the super values (ethics, transparency, respect, meritocracy, gratitude, loyalty), but the reality, the effective realization, is based on behaviors, actions and applications. This is the difference that makes the difference and makes that company potentially wiser than another as it is more sustainable and more transparent.

Wisdom requires additional investments, but the long-term benefits will presumably be greater as both stakeholders and end customers will potentially be more satisfied and inspired by these more virtuous and respectful behaviours.

All the best!
