NEC invents meters for a multi-speed web
The 'neutrality' of the Internet is a concept dear to defenders of the web, and ensures that there are no privileged users on the network: all requests travel on the same information highways and there are no reserved lanes. However, this neutrality may be eroded by some recent developments in network technology. The Internet has been tightening its threads in recent years, with users increasingly resorting to downloading videos and other high-intensity content. The problem is that transmission speeds fluctuate from moment to moment, and link quality becomes difficult to maintain. NEC Corp. has developed a new technology that allows transmission speeds to be estimated in less than a second, thus allowing providers to regulate the volume of data traffic and thus optimize the regularity of streaming.
However, this innovation could be used in the future to create different sectors of the Internet, with reserved lanes for privileged users.
