It is in the Salle des Etats that the most famous painting in the world is exhibited: The Gioconda. This vast room, the largest in the museum, can accommodate many visitors and is now an opportunity to see a different Mona Lisa.

We recall that the Salle des Etats was chosen in 1966 to exhibit Leonardo's masterpiece; and is the largest in the Louvre. One of its first admirers was King Francis I who invited Leonardo da Vinci to France and bought the painting from him in 1518. And this is how the work entered the royal collections which have been exhibited at the Louvre since the Revolution.

Since 2005, the Mona Lisa has been standing alone in the center of the room, behind a window that protects it, which meets the safety and conservation requirements. We remind you that the work is not painted on canvas but on a poplar wood table, which over time presented a crack. For this reason the Mona Lisa must always be kept in extremely stable temperature and humidity conditions in an air-conditioned display case exactly where it is today.

Being able to admire the Mona Lisa through an 8-minute experience means experiencing new emotions. This was made possible by the research of the curators Louis Frank and Vincent Delieuvin who in ten years of studies made the preparation of this exhibition possible. The experience begins in the Salle des Etats, facing the Mona Lisa, where the visitor has the opportunity to virtually immerse themselves in the 500-year history of this masterpiece. The decoration then disappears to raise the mystery of the identity of the model painted by Leonardo da Vinci. Mona Lisa comes to life and reveals who she was while also discovering the details of her hairstyle and her clothes.

The application is available on the Google Play Store and Apple Store, the experience can also be downloaded on virtual reality platforms, for people with headsets, and visible on the Microfolies network. It is offered in many countries through the Institut français catalogue.
