Germany unlocks Leopard 2 for Ukraine and tries with Macron to relaunch the competitive challenge to the USA

Germany is finally moving with two novelties: yes to Polish Leopard 2 tanks in Ukraine and yes to a European plan to defend European competitiveness against Biden's subsidies

Germany unlocks Leopard 2 for Ukraine and tries with Macron to relaunch the competitive challenge to the USA

La Germany no longer opposes the sending of tanks Leopard 2 of German manufacture to Ukraine and if Poland, which holds them, requests them, it is ready to give the authorisation. It is not a trivial novelty in the framework of the Russia-Ukraine war: the powerful Leopard 2 tanks could be the weapon that overturns the balance on the field in favor of Kiev in the hope of one day arriving at the peace negotiating table.

GERMANY, THE SENDING OF LEOPARD 2 TO UKRAINE MAY MARK A TURNING POINT IN THE RUSSIANS WARA-UKRAINE

The announcement of the Leopard 2 news was announced by the combative German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, while specifying that so far the Poland he did not make an official request to Berlin to send the tanks to the Ukraine. But the path is clear.

The authorization to send the German-made Leopard 2s supplied to Poland is a political and military novelty of great importance, but it is not the only one concerning Berlin. After the misunderstandings of the recent past, Germany in fact tries to relaunch the axis with France of Macron and it does so on the economic and industrial terrain in the hope of countering the American offensive which does not skimp on aid to businesses to strengthen competitiveness and attract new investments in the USA which risk putting European companies in difficulty.

In recent days, the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, had already announced a European fund to support the competitiveness of the Old Continent and yesterday Germany and France took a step further. It was French President Emmanuel Macron, after meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, to announce a "common line" between France and Germany in favor of a "rapid and ambitious" European response to American aid to their industries according to the indications that emerged in Davos from President Von der Leyen herself for the creation of an EU sovereign wealth fund to support European companies and their competitiveness.

FRANCE-GERMANY, A PLAN FOR EUROPEAN COMPETITIVENESS AND WHAT IS ITALY DOING?

The goal of Macron and Scholz is to push for a change in European economic and industrial policy in view of the European Council in February. The German chancellor has a very clear objective of supporting European companies, like Macron, but he does not go too far on the instruments that will be adopted - there is talk of a possible Sure 2 fund - and yet he advocates the opportunity to loosen the constraints on state aid ("The rules are too bureaucratic and therefore we want to change them"), on which, however, the former Italian premier expressed himself critically in Corriere della Sera Mario Monti, fearing that the single European market could be undermined.

An idea that is circulating is that, as a first step, the unspent funds of the Recovery could be recovered and reused in support of European competitiveness. But, beyond the tools that will be adopted, it is important that the defense of the competitiveness of European companies - not just those of Germany and France - once again occupy the scene and on this terrain it will be important to understand how theItaly of the Meloni government.
