Open Fiber's optical fiber lights up 200 mini-villages

Open Fiber's super-fast Internet reaches even the so-called “very white” areas, i.e. those Municipalities so remote that they have so far been classified as "without Internet access". The latest example is Colletorto, a very small municipality in Molise (province of Campobasso), with fewer than 2.000 inhabitants but among them is the first customer to have activated a fiber optic connection, through the partner operator Dimensione.

The coverage (guaranteed through a new infrastructure, FWA fixed wireless access) for now it is temporary and emergency and is part of the commitment made by Open Fiber not to leave any area of the country isolated, in this very complicated phase, between lockdown, smart working and distance learning. In the future, however, the real FTTH - Fiber To The Home network will be completed.

The company led by Elisabetta Ripa, therefore, in addition to building ultra-broadband networks in black areas (as a private operator) and white areas (as concessionaire of Infratel tenders), is also intervening in about 200 municipalities defined as "very white" by Agcom, for a total of approximately 150 real estate units, thus anticipating in many cases the coverage envisaged by the great BUL plan through the (mainly) use of the FWA.

The road map shared with the Ministry provides that by October 2021 up to 171 municipalities can activate an internet connection with good quality standards. In the following months, the remaining very white areas identified will then be covered. As scheduled, where required by the Infratel tenders that govern the plan BUL, in these municipalities the FTTH network will then be completed, which will reach homes, businesses and PA offices with fiber optics.

Open Fiber directly supports the investments for this acceleration, amounting to approx 5 million of Euro. "The company - explains a note - is well aware of the strategic importance of ultra-broadband telecommunications infrastructures, especially in a time of emergency like the one we are going through, which has accelerated the adoption of smart working by many companies, as well as the diffusion of services dedicated to digital distance learning to make up for the closure of schools".
