"Legal diplomacy", an all-Italian art

The book investigates the corruption phenomenon and the activities to counter it but also the bilateral activities between foreign ministries with surprising results

"Legal diplomacy", an all-Italian art

The pathology of economic activity in the form of corruption unfortunately it is a widespread phenomenon in Italy and particularly analyzed in recent years, also for an increased collective sensitivity. One aspect of particular interest is that of the analysis of the impact of the corruption phenomenon as a whole, both on the economic development of the country and on the ability to attract foreign investments in Italy.

The book "Legal Diplomacy" (Italian Scientific Editions, Naples 2018), written by Alfredo Maria Durante Mangoni, Minister Plenipotentiary and by Giovanni Tartaglia Polcini, magistrate and legal adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and enriched by an effective Preface by Paola Severino, arises a first objective of illustrating Italy's primacy in the fight against corruption with regulatory models that are carefully studied, if not even singled out as reference models, abroad. But not only.

There is, then, a second objective linked to the so-called legal diplomacy, which is referred to in the title, and which is divided into targeted bilateral initiatives carried forward by our Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in particular by the two authors of this interesting volume, configuring itself as concrete support for the orientation towards the legality of the socio-economic environment.

In the first part of the book, in addition to the necessary methodological aspects, some of the most significant moments and documents developed and defined at an international level (G20, OECD, Council of Europe, etc.) are reviewed from the perspective of the legally oriented socio-economic environment. A second part then follows with pages dedicated to analyzing further critical issues relating to specific areas and analyzing the contrasting measures adopted and proposed in the fight against corruption.

Ultimately, a book that approaches the phenomenon of corruption in an original way, showing known and less known aspects of the so-called legal diplomacy, authentic flagship of the country and which is proposed as a useful and stimulating reading, not only for a small circle of insiders, but also for the decision makers of economic matters.
