Curiosity slows down the aging of the brain: advice from science

There is a way to slow down the aging of our brain and, if you want, it's even easier than you might think. Lifely.it collects some advice from the neuropsychologist and president of Assomesana, Giuseppe Iannoccari.

"Science now provides us with information that allows us to effectively slow down brain aging, to stop it or even in some cases to reverse the trend and therefore improve", explains the scholar.

Lo Iannoccari recounts how at the end of the Mental Gymnastics courses carried out by the Institute, improvements were found in some brain activities which debunk the myth of the binomial aging of personal data = brain aging.

The brain is a muscle, and like all other muscles in our body, it must be kept in shape through exercise.

Iannoccari considers curiosity as a key factor for a good shape of the brain. “Curiosity is the engine for understanding new things, experimenting with new skills which, once acquired, open the way for others, and so on, broadening interests more and more”.

Those who, on the other hand, are disinterested in everything that is "new" and "unknown", or perhaps difficult to understand, are destined to age, from a cerebral point of view, much faster than the curious.

The neuropsychologist also recommends some exercises that can help our brain keep fit: walking around shops, observing a shop window and carefully looking at individual objects and then trying to remember them later; play the letter game to implement the language and retrieve the names in memory; play the group game in order to improve both language and semantics (the game consists in identifying a category and thinking of the greatest number of words attributable to it.

In addition to the "things to do", however, there are also things not to do. Which? Drinking too much alcohol, getting too little sleep, passively participating in daily activities, watching too much TV.
