The crisis gets tangled: Mattarella wants "clear decisions" for Tuesday, otherwise elections

The Head of State curbs the inconclusive political forces and gives them a peremptory ultimatum: government proposals by Tuesday or elections - Cartabia possible Prime Minister for a guarantee government

The crisis gets tangled: Mattarella wants "clear decisions" for Tuesday, otherwise elections

Or by Tuesday the main political forces, and in particular Cinque Stelle and Pd, will provide "clear answers" on how to solve the government crisis with a new majority capable of gathering the trust of Parliament or it will be inevitable treturn to early elections with a guarantee government. It is the brusque ultimatum launched by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, at the conclusion of the disappointing first round of consultations.

When it seemed that the political crisis could take the path of an agreement between the Democratic Party and the Five Stars, the consultations at the Quirinale actually complicated the situation, putting everything back into play. not excluded the return to the field in extremis of the League, who is currently still offside.

The bone of contention that has distanced Cinque Stelle and Pd from what seemed to be a downward path towards an agreement for a new government is cutting the number of MPs. The first sign of disagreement came from the secretary of the Democratic Party, Nicola Zingaretti, who after the meeting at the Quirinale with Mattarella, leaked that among the non-negotiable conditions for a government agreement with the Five Stars there is - in addition to the budget maneuver and the withdrawal of Salvini's Security decrees - the stop to cutting the number of parliamentarians.

The political leader of the Five Stars, Di Maio, immediately took advantage of it to relaunch a 10-point program, in which cutting the number of parliamentarians is instead a priority, but without mentioning the Democratic Party as a possible recipient for a government negotiation nor definitively cut ties with the League.

In short, doubts, suspicions, poisons, contradictions instead of "clear decisions in a short time" as Mattarella asks which has decided to hold the main political forces accountable. If by Tuesday - when consultations resume - they are unable to present a government solution capable of garnering a majority in Parliament, the path of anti-hype elections will be inevitable.

If this were the case, it will obviously not be the Conte government that will manage the elections but a guarantee government and not by chance in the last few hours the hypothesis has circulated that it could be led the vice president of the Constitutional Court, Marta Cartabia. But they are only first guesses. In fact, faced with the ravine of the irreversibility of the crisis, the assembly of parliamentarians of the Five Stars asked the leaders of the Democratic Party for a first meeting to clarify the fate of the cut in parliamentarians. In turn, the secretary of the Democratic Party, Zingaretti, took a half step back arguing that the 10 points presented by Di Maio to the Head of State are a basis for starting negotiations between the Democratic Party and the Five Stars to form a new government. But the road remains uphill. As things stand, the predictions that can be made are: 50% Five Star Government-Pd and 50% early elections.
