Chinese hands on BlackBerry. According to the Wall Street Journal, Lenovo is considering buying the Canadian smartphone group. The two companies, according to the newspaper, have also already signed a non-disclosure agreement, for the study of the accounting books of BlackBerry, which a few weeks ago confirmed a plan to lay off 40% of its workforce, launching at the same time the profit warning.
Lenovo is actually just one of the many companies that have recently shown interest in taking over at least part of the Canadian group's business, even if at the moment the only formal offer is the one made by Fairfax Financial.
Beyond the financial aspects, no less important are the other fronts that the possible purchase of BlackBerry by Lenovo would open.
Very few, in the parts of Washington, will like the idea of leaving important communication devices and services such as Messeger, which are widely used by White House officials, in the hands of the Chinese giant. So much so that the CFius interdepartmental group is already assessing the risks of such an operation for national security.
