The Champions League returns to Sky from 2018: Premium joke

UEFA preferred the offer of satellite television owned by Ruper Murdoch, who thus won the TV rights for the editions from 2018 to 2021 – Each one cost over 200 million euros.

The Champions League returns to Sky from 2018: Premium joke

After only three years, the Champions League says goodbye to Mediaset Premium and returns to Sky Sport. Rupert Murdoch's pay TV won the tender with the Alfa Romeo for TV rights for the period 2018-2021, putting more than 200 million euros on the plate per season.

An offer that UEFA has rewarded, even if – according to rumors of the past few days – Mediaset had proposed a similar figure. The news was released by Radiocor and it is not yet official, because the terms of the contract remain to be defined.

But pay attention to the timing: the next edition of the Champion League will still be exclusive to Premium. The top European football competition will land again on the Sky satellite platform only starting from the following season, the same one in which Italy will once again have four participating teams.

It remains to be understood whether, as also circulated in rumors of the last few weeks, the assignment to Sky of the licenses for the three Champions League tournaments 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 will lead to a sub-license to Rai at a later time for the transmission of matches in the clear. The hypothesis is considered credible by some insiders.
