Japan Stock Exchange Faces 'Ghibli Curse' Tonight

It is the wind from the Sahara desert and it is also the latest Maserati model. But it is also the name of a Japanese film production company, famous for animations such as "Spirited Away" (the story of a girl trapped in a supernatural 'Turkish bath' - or 'Japanese bath') or "My Neighbor Totoro" (which tells of a giant raccoon). Studio Ghibli animations are regularly broadcast in the evenings on Japanese TV (by Nippon Television Network Corp.) and the problem is this. Data on the US economy, transmitted in the morning New York time and in the evening at 9.30 Tokyo time, are weaker than expected when transmitted while a Ghibli production is in progress. This coincidence, which, according to the fervent 'Curse of the Ghibli' believers is no coincidence, occurred in 8 of the last nine convergences. And in seven out of eight cases the dollar weakened against the yen and stock prices too.

For example, on July 8, 2011, during the broadcast of "Kiki's Delivery Service," American job data fell short of expectations by as much as 86%, and the following Monday (job data is always released on Friday) the Nikkei lost points.

In short, tonight many Japanese traders will watch the Studio Ghibli film while keeping the futures trading platform open.
