Karl Lagerfeld: part of his collection on sale at Sotheby's

Sotheby's pays tribute to this genius designer with the sale of over 1000 lots from his residences in France and Monaco, an anthology of his personal taste but also of his life and career

Karl Lagerfeld: part of his collection on sale at Sotheby's

Divided between Monaco, Paris and Cologne, the sales are in his image, multiple and surprising, telling the story of the couturier, the collector, decorator and photographer.

Insatiable collector, Karl Lagerfeld he has been creating interior designs all his life. He opted for the colorful and playful Italian design of the Memphis group whose humor he fell in love with in the 80s. He then turned to the French decorative arts of the eighteenth century, which he considered an ideal of elegance and refinement. In the early 70s he was the same Art Deco enthusiast, which he described as the roots of “this modernity that I tirelessly seek”. For the last twenty years of his life, he has been designing contemporary with the likes of Mark Newson, Martin Szekely and Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, with whom he has created a new futuristic interior at the dawn of the 3rd millennium. His last residence in Louveciennes was unexpectedly decorated in a style relating to 20s Germany, with furniture designed by Bruno Paul and early XNUMXth century German advertising posters.

The sale also includes numerous lots featuring Karl Lagerfeld – from his portrait of Takashi Murakami to Tokidoki dolls – in addition to the designer's personal items; these include bowls adorned with the image of her cat Choupette, a Jeff Koons Balloon Venus, three Rolls Royces, the iconic leather Mitaines that he has worn consistently over the last 20 years and a selection of suit jackets from Dior, Saint Laurent, KL , Comme des garçons and Martin Margiela.
