Juncker in Italy, meets Renzi today

The president of the European Commission Jean Claude Juncker will arrive in Rome today for a discussion with the Premier Matteo Renzi.

An interview that represents an important attempt to calm the waters after weeks of tensions and controversies due to the criticisms that our country has reserved for the overall profile of European policies. The Prime Minister has repeated it several times: the European Union needs to be reformed and our country will not back down, actively participating in the renewal process.

The political clash between the two leaders has also taken on heated tones, but the time for détente seems to have arrived. Juncker's intention is to bring the confrontation with Italy back to a dimension of 'normality', which removes any propensity for permanent conflict. Italy, for its part, intends to reaffirm its position in relation to immigration policies and the need to grant greater budgetary flexibility to avoid the political and institutional decline of the Union.

Meanwhile, Juncker has given an important signal: tomorrow the country report on Italy will be published, i.e. the analysis by Brussels technicians on our country's macroeconomic imbalances. According to forecasts, the continental concerns would concern the amount of our public debt, but to avoid further controversies, the decisions on the therapies to be used to bring the debt back to a sustainable level and the communications of the Commission have been postponed to 8 March. In the past, analysis, evaluation and decisions have been communicated at the same time.

In addition to the Premier, Juncker will meet the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, the Presidents of the Chambers Laura Boldrini and Pietro Grasso and the former President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano.
