Johnson, the battle for the succession begins: all the stages of the appointment of the new prime minister, 11 candidates

It has officially started the race for leadership of the Conservative Party English and therefore to the seat of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. 5 days from resignation of Boris Johnson, who, however, will remain in office pending the appointment of the new Tory leader, the party committee responsible for managing internal elections have established the rules of succession. The aim is to close the game by 5 September, the day on which a new Prime Minister will finally arrive in Downing Street.

The rules of the race for succession

Before going into the details of the succession to the leadership of the Conservative Party, a premise must be made: in the United Kingdom, the Prime Minister is the leader of the party that won the last elections. If the Premier is disheartened by his own party colleagues, it is up to the latter to indicate a new name pending a new electoral round, which in this case is scheduled for 2024.

The appointment of the new leader of the Conservative Party will take place through an internal consultation. There commission 1922, the internal body that manages the procedure has established all the stages. By 19 pm today, Italian time, the conservative deputies who aspire to the seat of number one in the conservative party and therefore of Prime Minister will have to present their candidacy.

Already tomorrow, Wednesday 13 July, there will be a first scissoring. Only those who have managed to obtain the will be able to officially apply support of at least 20 party deputies. And here comes the first novelty, because until yesterday the threshold to be reached was much lower: only 9 deputies in favor were enough. However, the increase was necessary both because of the strong fibrillation within the party and because of the desire to proceed with a "reasonably fast" process.

Returning to the rules, the next day, Thursday July 14, will arrive the first ballot: only candidates who have the support of 30 MEPs will go forward: the last candidate will be excluded, and so on. After the first cuts, each successive ballot will eliminate the claimant or claimant who receives the least support from fellow deputies. This will continue as long as they remain only two candidates are at stake. At that point "the electoral campaign" will begin among the 160 party members. The new Conservative leader and British prime minister, as mentioned, will be announced the September 5.
