Jannik Sinner is writing tennis history Italian. The very talented South Tyrolean tennis player won the tournament Miami ATP 1000 beating the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 6-3 6-1 in the final. With this success, as of Monday the 22-year-old from South Tyrol has overtaken the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and has officially become number 2 in the world. No Italian tennis player has ever reached such a position in the international ranking.

The first place in world tennis is now in the sights, today firmly in the hands of Novak Djokovic. But when could Jannik Sinner become world number one? Let's do some calculations.

Jannik Sinner's extraordinary march

August 2023: Jannik Sinner wins his first ATP Masters 1000. October 2023: with a victory over Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner becomes number 4 in the world, equaling Adriano Panatta's record in 1976 after winning Roland Garros. November: victory in Davis Cup. In the Grand Slam trials he won the 2024 edition of the Australian Open, the first Major won in men's singles by an Italian tennis player on a surface other than clay. On February 18th Sinner wins the ATP 500 in Rotterdam, achieving his twelfth victory of the year out of twelve matches played. On February 19th he thus became the first Italian to reach the third place in the computerized ranking. After the Indian Wells setback, Sinner also conquered Miami and the second of the world ranking.

The ATP ranking

First place in the ATP rankings is still far away, but the race has already begun. He is the number one tennis player in the world today Novak Djokovic who despite not playing in Miami is in command with 9725 points. Continued Sinner with 8710. Third place for the Spanish alcaraz with 8645 points. Followed by Daniil Medvedev (7165 points), Alexander Zverev (5370), fourth and fifth respectively. Pious Andrey Rublev (4890), Holger Rune (3795). Casper Ruud (3615), Grigor Dimitrov (3540), Hubert Hurkacz (3425) close.

Sinner's race to first place: when can he become number one?

The ATP ranking is formed based on the difference between the results of the previous year and the following year in the same tournament.

The next appointments will be fundamental. The Masters 1000 of Monte Carlo in April, then Madrid and Rome internationals. At that point the second Grand Slam of the season will arrive: the Roland Garros. This will be followed by two consecutive matches on grass with the ATP 500 in Halle and the prestigious Wimbledon, the last stage before the Paris Olympics.

To be the red clay will be decisive with the three ATP 1000s: in 2023 in Monte Carlo Sinner was eliminated in the semi-final and will have to defend 360 points, Djokovic was eliminated in the round of 2023. In Madrid Sinner did not play, while Djokovic withdrew due to injury. In Rome, however, in 500 the South Tyrolean went out in the round of 15, the Serbian in the quarterfinals. In between, there is the ATP 21 tournament in Barcelona (90-2023 April): Sinner will discard 250 points, in that same week of XNUMX Djokovic played the Srpska Open XNUMX and exited in the quarterfinals.

Then the key event, Roland Garros: last year Sinner went out in the second round, Djokovic won the title.

Paris will therefore be the first opportunity that the Italian tennis player will have to overtake Djokovic. From here to the end of Roland Garros the Italian tennis player will only have to defend 585 points, against Djokovic's 2315 and Alcaraz's 2265.

Meanwhile Sinner is already in first place in the race for the Finals. That is, the ranking that leads to the Turin Masters at the end of the year. He is now at 3900 points, while Medvedev is at 2550 and Zverev at 1835. Djokovic is only twelfth less than a thousand points.
