Good news for travelers and commuters. The Antitrust has established that Italo will be able to sell tickets for Trenitalia regional and Intercity trains, combining them with their own high-speed trains. What does it mean? This means that by going to the Italo website or app, it will be possible to buy a journey that includes not only the section covered by the Italo high-speed train, but also the section that can be traveled on with a regional train. By giving a practical example, those who have to go to Rome Trastevere or Magliana from Milan can buy on the Italo website both the high-speed ticket that arrives at Rome Termini or Rome Tiburtina and that of the regional Trenitalia that leads to Trastevere or Magliana.
The Antitrust decision
Until now, they could be purchased on the Italo website or app only tickets for high-speed trains of Ntv, the company that owns Italo. If travelers also needed a regional ticket, they had to go to the Trenitalia website or app and choose the regional ticket or an integrated ticket with Intercity and regional tickets, which are managed by Trenitalia itself or by its subsidiaries (Trenord in Lombardy or TPER in Emilia -Romagna, etc.) This situation, according to the Antitrust was looking for to Trenitalia “an unrepeatable competitive advantage by the competitor”, i.e. Italo.
For some time the latter had been asking Trenitalia to allow it to sell integrated tickets, but an agreement had never been found. Now the Competition and Market Authority has taken care of solving the problem. The Antitrust had in fact opened an investigation which ended with this new solution, proposed directly by Trenitalia.
Combined tickets on Italo: how it works
From today, therefore, Italo will be able to sell its high-speed tickets combined with those of connections for Trenitalia's regional and Intercity trains. Not only that: travelers will be able to buy, together with the Italo high-speed train, also i tickets for
"subsidiaries by Trenitalia (TPER and Trenord, in Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy)”. Then there is one last novelty: i regional and Intercity monitors of Trenitalia will also signal the connections with the high-speed Italo.
