Italicum, M5S returns to the past: yes to proportional

After the decision of the Consulta to postpone the decision on the Italicum, the 5 Star Movement returns to the attack on the electoral law, despite the fact that just two months ago Luigi Di Maio had stated that "It is not a priority of the Movement".

Today a new change in front by the penstellati who have filed a motion that commits the Chamber, in view of the discussion on the motion of Sel and Si, to adopt a "electoral system with proportional formula to be applied in medium-small constituencies, since - according to what we read in the text - in addition to ensuring representativeness and closeness to the voters, it favors the aggregation between small and medium-small political forces, encouraging them to put their ideas together, if reconcilable, within larger but cohesive political forces".

So it's back in vogue the proportional system that characterized Italy in the First Republic, which however risks being a remedy worse than the disease, given that, based on the past, obtaining governance with a similar mechanism is a very difficult undertaking. It is no coincidence that the 80s are also famous for the explosion of public debt, caused by the requests of many political groups, whose rise was favored by an electoral system that exalted the fragmentation of parliamentary representation and the triumph of corporatism.

The project is based on the famous "Democratellum", the electoral law proposal born following an online consultation of the grillini in 2014 which provides for the introduction of a proportional system with preferences and the creation of a "penalty" vote to eliminate a candidate from the list, without any majority bonus.

“The Italicum must be canceled tout court – say the Grillini deputies of the Constitutional Affairs commission – as it is not a law that can be improved because it is undemocratic and unconstitutional. The Renzi government seems to be made up of a group of amateurs in jeopardy because it was not even able to write a good electoral law, after the rejection of the Porcellum by the Consulta. We don't like Italicum, regardless of whether it can help us win the elections or not, because we care more about the interests of the citizens, who must be adequately represented in Parliament both in the Chamber and in the Senate”.

A proposal that aims to underline, after the vicissitudes of Rome, the political diversity of the 5 Stars who "renounce" an electoral law which, at least on paper, would favor them in the event that the next elections go to the ballot, but which risks produce harmful effects for governance.

"We ask Parliament - conclude the grillini - to quickly approve a new electoral law".
