Italy, electricity consumption at 2004 levels

Electricity consumption is down in Italy, returning to the level of 2004 after two years of recovery after the negative peak of 2009. On a territorial basis, the South, Sardinia and the North-West recorded the most consistent drops. Renewables grow.

Terna announces that for the second time in four years the best before date in Italy of electricity, which in 2012 recorded a drop of 2,8% with 325 billion kilowatt hours absorbed, the same level of demand as in 2004. The drop, it must be said, was much worse in 2009, when the grid recorded lower consumption equal to 5,7% compared to the previous year. Then twenty-four months (2010 and 2011) in recovery, and the new slowdown in the year that has just ended.

On a territorial basis, the most consistent drops were recorded in Sardinia (-10,3%) and the entire North-West including Liguria, Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta, which together recorded a decrease of 7,7%. 

La question of electricity was largely satisfied (86,8%) with domestic production, while the remaining portion came from the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries.

La production net national output, equal to 284 billion kilowatt hours, decreased by 2,3% compared to 2011, while wind (+34,2%) and photovoltaic (+71,8%) production increased significantly, against a decrease hydroelectric and thermoelectric by 8,2% and 6,3% respectively.

As for demand, the latter was down by 3,6% compared to December 2011, but the figure hides a greater drop in demand in the South (-6,1%) than in the Center (-3,1%) and in the North (-2,5%).
