In January, Italian industrial production grew by 0,8% compared to December. On an annual basis, however, there was a decrease of 3,6%. This was communicated by Istat, specifying that on average for the November-January quarter the index fell by 1,9% compared to the immediately preceding quarter.

In January 2013, the indices corrected for calendar effects show a positive trend variation only for the grouping of consumer goods (+0,8%). Significant decreases are recorded for intermediate goods (-6%) and for the energy sector (-5%), while a more limited decrease concerns capital goods (-4,5%).

Compared to January 2012, the sectors characterized by the highest growth rates are: the food, beverage and tobacco industries (+4,8%), the manufacture of computers, electronic and optical products, electromedical devices, measuring devices and watches ( +3,7%), the textile, clothing, leather and accessories industries (+3,5%). Among the sectors in decline, those that recorded the largest trend decreases in January are the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (-14,2%) and the manufacture of means of transport (-14%).
