Istat, more young people at work but total unemployment is growing

Signs of recovery in September but still weak: employment improves by 0,4% compared to August thanks above all to young people. Unemployed on the rise: 12,6%.

Istat, more young people at work but total unemployment is growing

Employment improved in September, above all thanks to the fall in youth unemployment, albeit in a framework that still remains critical. Istat certifies that the total employed in Italy are 22 million 457 thousand, up by 0,4% compared to the previous month (+82 thousand) and by 0,6% on an annual basis (+130 thousand).

The employment rate, equal to 55,9%, grew by 0,2 percentage points in economic terms and by 0,5 points compared to twelve months earlier. The number of unemployed, equal to 3 million 236 thousand, increased by 1,5% compared to the previous month (+48 thousand) and by 1,8% on an annual basis (+58 thousand).

The unemployment rate was 12,6%, up by 0,1 percentage points both in cyclical terms and over the twelve months.
The unemployed between 15-24 year olds are 698 thousand. The incidence of the unemployed aged 15-24 on the population in this age group is 11,7%, down by 0,1 percentage points compared to the previous month but up by 0,6 points on an annual basis. The unemployment rate of 15-24 year olds, i.e. the share of the unemployed on the total of those employed or looking for work, is equal to 42,9%, down by 0,8 percentage points compared to the previous month but up by 1,9 points in the trend comparison.

The number of inactive individuals between the ages of 15 and 64 decreased by 0,9% compared to the previous month and by 2,1% compared to twelve months previously. The inactivity rate, equal to 35,9%, decreased by 0,3 percentage points in cyclical terms and by 0,7 points on an annual basis.
