Istat: GDP +0,2% in the first quarter

In the first quarter of the year the Italian GDP, adjusted for calendar effects and seasonally adjusted, increased by 0,2% from the previous quarter and by 0,8% year on year. This is the preliminary estimate released by Istat.

This is a slightly higher growth than that predicted by Intesa Sanpaolo economists (+0,1% on a quarter and +0,7% on a year), while the result is in line with the average of the surveys carried out by the financial agency Bloomberg .

The cyclical change is "the synthesis of a decrease in added value in the industry sector and an increase in both agriculture and services", writes Istat.

On the demand side, "there is a positive contribution from the national component (gross of inventories) and a negative contribution from the net foreign component", continues the Institute.

In the same period, GDP increased in cyclical terms by 0,6% in Germany, by 0,3% in France and the United Kingdom and by 0,2% in the United States. In trend terms, there was an increase of 2,1% in the United Kingdom, 1,9% in the United States, 1,7% in Germany and 0,8% in France.

The variation acquired for 2017 in Italy, i.e. the annual growth that would be obtained in the presence of zero cyclical variation in the remaining quarters of the year, is equal to +0,6%. The government has forecast growth of 1,1% for this year.
