Istat: in 2013 wages beat inflation, but the increase is the lowest since 1982 (+1,4%)

Last year, hourly wages grew in Italy by 1,4% on an annual basis, while inflation stopped at 1,2% – At the end of 2013, there were 47 contracts awaiting renewal (of which 15 belonging to the public administration), relating to approximately 6,3 million employees (of which approximately 2,9 million in the public sector).

Average for 2013 the hourly wage it grew in Italy by 1,4% on an annual basis. A rate higher than that of inflation, which stopped at 1,2% last year. Istat announced it today. The data had a positive effect on the improvement of the climate of consumer confidence Italians in January, even if it is the lowest increase since 1982, ie since the beginning of the reconstructed historical series.

Above-average increases are observed in the following sectors: food, beverages and tobacco (4,1%), agriculture (+2,7%) and chemicals (+2,3%). In the private sector, the smallest variations are found in the construction sector (+0,4%) and in the textile, clothing and leather processing sector (+0,8%). There were no increases in the public administration.

In December, the hourly contractual wage index remained unchanged from the previous month, but increased by 1,3% year-on-year. The sectors showing the greatest increases are those of telecommunications (+4,0%), agriculture (+3,5%) and engineering (+2,3%). 

At the end of 2013 i contracts awaiting renewal were 47 (of which 15 belonging to the public administration), relating to approximately 6,3 million employees (of which approximately 2,9 million in the public sector). The wait for renewal for workers with expired contracts is on average 32,2 months for all employees and 18,6 months for those in the private sector.

At the end of December, the national collective labor agreements in force for the economic part concerned 51,1% of employed employees and the share of employees awaiting renewal was 48,9% in the total economy and 34% in the private sector.
