We are second only to Spain in terms of youth unemployment. And certainly not to be bragged about. The president of Istat, Enrico Giovannini, declared that in the first 9 months of 2011 the employment of young people aged between 18 and 29 decreased by 2,5%. Almost 80 fewer young people than in the same period of 2010 have a job.
But what worries the president of Istat even more is women's employment. In Italy, on average, fewer than one out of two women work and in the South only 30%, said Giovannini during a hearing in the Chamber. Furthermore, "women continue to be employed in precarious jobs more frequently than men and remain in precarious conditions for longer over time".
These data show the weak competitiveness of our labor market compared to other European countries and the need to rethink this system.
