Istat: inflation +1% in January, top since 2013

In January inflation raise your head in Italy, accelerating at 1%, from 0,5% in December. It's about the highest level since August 2013, when inflation was 1,2%. On a monthly basis, the increase was 0,3%. This was communicated by Istat, which revised upwards the preliminary estimates.

The rise in inflation is due to the product components "whose prices show greater volatility", explained the Institute. These are, in particular, unregulated energy goods (+9%, from +2,4% in the previous month) and unprocessed food (+5,3%, from +1,8% in December). At the same time, the decline in the prices of regulated energy goods slowed down (-2,8%, from -5,8%).

Thanks to the bad weather, the prices of the fresh vegetables rose by 20,4%, from +3% in December, while those of vegetables by 7,3%, from +4,7% in the previous month.

Prices are also growing strongly diesel by means of transport: growth widens by 10,6 percentage points (+13,9% in January, it was +3,3% in December). For the petrol the increase is 6 percentage points (+9,3%, from +3,3% in the previous month).

in January theunderlying inflation (ie excluding energy and fresh food, the goods with the most volatile price trend) slowed down to +0,5%, from +0,6% in the previous month. Net of energy goods alone, on the other hand, it rose to +0,8% (from +0,7% in December).

On an annual basis, the growth in the prices of beni accelerated significantly (+1,2%, from +0,1% in December) while that of services slowed down (+0,7%, from +0,9% in the previous month). Consequently, compared to December, the inflation differential between services and goods returns negative after 46 months, falling to minus 0,5 percentage points.

The inflation acquired for 2017 is equal to +0,7%.

As for the so-called "shopping cart”, which includes the prices of food, home and personal care products, increased in January by 1,1% on a monthly basis and by 1,9% on an annual basis (it was +0,6% on December).

Also in this case the annual figure is the highest since August 2013. The prices of frequently purchased products increased by 0,9% in quarterly terms, recording an annual growth of 2,2%, from '1,0% of the previous month.
